The Cure for the “Me” Generation

Do unto others what you have them do unto you – the Golden Rule says. As we spend time with people in our group, community or society, we would not always have the same insights and perspective on things. As Werner Erhard had put it, if you put a bunch of human beings together, it becomes a massive amount of chaos and complexity (Erhard, 2006).

We should understand this premise for us not to fall into the trap of hating each other. It is wise to see others as you see yourself, as you love others as you love yourself (1 John 3:23). This is God’s commandment to us after all. It never fails to see others in the eyes of God. Cultivating understanding, kindness, compassion – love in us is a long-forgotten thing in this century. To be exact, it was said that this generation we are living in is the “Me” generation. There is nothing wrong with caring for the individual self. But, care for it should result to caring for others as well.

But by the Grace of God I am what I am, and His Grace to me was not without effect (Ephesians 15:10). We are people who experience a lot of things. Most of the things that happen to us are out of our control. But, to look at it, our response also play a vital role in our lives. Acceptance is the key. There are some things or conditions in life that we cannot change. But, we can change our outlook by looking at things in a different light. As we begin to accept ourselves as we are – we begin to see the things life is openly teaching us.

Accept yourself in this moment and recommit, if you choose, to change and learning. You can forgive yourself fully. Let blame and remorse go. They are not useful (Budd & Rothestein, 2000, p. 120). Learn from your past mistakes and let yourself be transformed more into the destiny you were made for. As we begin to accept ourselves, it will be easier to accept others as well – and to understand them.

What are you making happen consciously – in yourself, in your relationships, and in your organization? Consider this your call to consciousness. Consider this a wake-up call, a call to consciousness in all you do. This consciousness will be the basis for a new understanding of how you create the world around you. And it will serve as a basis for transforming to something much more powerful and meaningful (Hacker & Roberts, 2004).

The Power of Self-Awareness

Identity is an individual’s conscious description of who he is (Chapter 15: Self-

concept NA). How one describes oneself is his identity. When we ask people about

who they are, we get an insight of their identity. However, an individual’s identity is

developed over time, constantly evolving, and influenced by self-awareness

(Chapter 15: Self-concept NA).

In being aware or conscious of how one feels, think, behaves and believes at

any said time, self-awareness is being developed. In a group, how a person

responds within it becomes his identity. As a leader or a part of a group, one needs

to reflect on the feelings, thoughts and responses he is creating in it.

For what he does becomes who he is in the group. Self-awareness plays a

vital role in one’s identity. Self-awareness involves how consciously knowing how

the self thinks, feels, believes, and behaves at any specific time. According to

Burkhardt and Nathaniel, we can enhance self-awareness by developing the ability

to step back and look at any situation while being aware of ourselves and how we

are reacting to the situation. A client has to be able to identify one’s personal and

emotional feelings of a situation without judging oneself (Chapter 15: Self-concept

NA).

God made each person fearfully and wonderfully (Psalm 139:14). Each

person has a unique identity that sets him apart from others. Knowing this, people

are meant to complement each other towards a common good. Each one is a

master of his own identity. What one says about himself matters.

The Buddha in Dhammapada has a worthy quote, “the thought manifests as the word; the word manifests as the deed; the deed develops into habit; And habit hardens into character; So watch the thought and its ways to care; and let it spring from love born out of concern for all beings. As the shadows follow the body, as we think, so we become.”

What one says tells a lot about his identity. One should be careful of what he declares upon himself and to others. In the book, you are what you say. Fernando Flores, a Chilean of great intellect once tried to speak out negative things about his life to his audience. After that, the audience fell into a depressed mood. Fernando then said, “Do you see that your speaking has changed your body, your mood, your physiology, and your possibilities for action? Language has generated a moment of life for you. The action of languaging changed you like a drug” (Budd & Rothestein, 2000, p. 125).

So, what we say about ourselves matters. It shapes our identity and character. It determines who we are in the group. A leader ought to be very careful on how he verbalizes things. He should take note of this since what he says matters most to the group he leads. It shapes how the group will work out. It either leads the group to work or fail.

The Birth of Transformation: Begin With Yourself

Every person is unique and different. Each person has his own talents, abilities and qualities that set him apart from the others. As we all have power instilled inside us. It includes the power to change.

In Ron Smothermon’s book, Transformation #1, he defined “Transformation” as a change in value rather than a change in form. According to him, “Transvaluation” is a better word for it and it is not accepted in our language” (Smothermon, 1982, p.5). “Everyone is subject to transformation. After all, as the saying goes, the only constant thing in this world is change. It is a non-negotiable in life. Everyone experiences and goes through such. We, as finite beings are to accept this fact. The very fact that we are finite is something that makes us subject to finding our own purpose in life. In fact, everyone is committed to having the experience of expanded value in his life” (Smothermon, 1982, p.5).

As a person, we get to have dreams and aspirations. In line with this truth, there is an innate thing in us to transform — to be better than before, to reach the unreachable and to experience the new.

Your Relationship with the Past, Present, and Future

When you disappear the past, then you are no longer resisting it. A lot of times, we have horrible experiences that we wish to forget. We do so by rejecting it, by trying to forget it, or by hoping it never happens to us. However, whatever we resist, persists.

When we are trying to fix the past or change it, then we find ourselves living our “present” according to the past, rather than the future. This is something we must deal with individually for you to make sure you create a future that is full of possibility for humanity.

You can create a future that gives you a current era that is full of life. Even if disappearing the past does not change your current circumstances, you will be able to see it from a new light. When you move in this spirit, then you become a cause of breakthrough and possibility, not only for yourself but also for your relationships, your family, your groups, your organizations, your society, and humanity. Werner Erhard tells

us, “It is the future into which you are living that gives you being and action in the

present, even with your current circumstances.”

What is the future you want to live into?

The Genesis of Transformation

Who you are will affect your relationships, your families, the organizations and societies you belong to and humanity as a whole. Yes, it will. Why? Because you matter. You cause things into existence.  This is why it is so important for you to be a space for possibility so that you can usher in breakthroughs for humanity. You cannot be a space for possibility unless you disappear the past. Your past must disappear in order for you to have a created future that you desire.

You may come to a point of confusion, asking yourself, how can it be possible for the future to not be affected by the past, in your being and action in the present? The future you are living into gives you being and action in the present. However, if you put your past in the future, it will appear as though who you are in the present is given by your past. Imagine that your life is categorized into filing cabinets. You have cabinets for the past, the present, and the future. If you file what belongs in the bottom drawer, into the top drawer, then you get a future that looks like the past, because you have filed the past in the future. It is a matter of filing things in their respective drawers. This is how transformation can freely take place.

The Woman and The Man

A woman has the ability to take hold of a seed and give form to it. She can take hold of a man’s vision and give form to it. That is how she helps meet the need. However, trapped in every woman is that dream, but she looks for a man to jumpstart the dream that is in her. That is why all women play with dollhouses. She looks for the man that is going to make that dream in her the reality of her. Now, when she cannot find a man on this plane, then she has to take a course in Marry-ology, and again look within herself.

She has to see things within that she knows not of. You are not without excuse. At some point, if she does not manifest with a man on the earth plane, God still demands you to manifest, but just bring it forth as a virgin, one who has never known a man. Do not sit around saying you are waiting on your man, because you, as the female, may have to take your man and act in the image and likeness of God and say, “Let us make man.” See, you may have thought you had a man, but only to discover that, when you got home, what you thought was in the box was not in the box.

Your man was missing crucial parts. It was missing a few cents. So, you have go into your divinity, as God, and say let us make man. Why? You have to finish off the job that his mother did not complete. You have to finish off the job his father did not complete. You have to undo the job of some things that have been done. Let us make man. That is part of your divinity. When things are brought to you, they are brought to you for you to overcome. The only reason it came to you is because you voted for it. You elected that assignment before the foundation of the earth. You asked for it and you got it. You get exactly what you ask for. Nothing shows up on your plate without you ordering it. Everything is in you. It really is all you.

God Already Designed You to Be Great

In life, key people that I needed to meet, I met them because I pulled them up out of me. I meet no one but me, because I am all one. You could not even meet me unless I was already in you. You are the universe. If you look at the word universe, it is u-n-i, which means one. We can look at this as one verse. The universe is really one word. The universe is really just one sound. You are just one word. There is only one mind, yet many ideas. When God speaks he really does not speak words. He just makes sound.

The supernatural thing is that God is really taking you further; He is really taking you into a sound. Though I speak the tongues of men and of angels, angels hear a sound. They are not into words. They are not into vocabulary. One brings closure to your day and one brings a start. Ahhh is the sound of creation. Ohmm is bringing things to a closure. That is why you have those sounds in meditation. Even when you hear the word peace in Hebrew, it seems to carry both sounds, peace from beginning to end.

Your name carries a sound. When you understand the sound of your name, you will understand the vibration it pulls. Naming is locked up in sound and vibration.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. It seems as if God created many in the one. He created the woman in the man.

You can see two things here. The woman is locked up in the man and, yet, she is the deep of man. In order for her to come out, God puts Adam into a deep sleep. Again, He had to fade to black. He had to go into the darkness to find his woman. I believe a woman has a depth in her that is not in a man. There is a depth in a woman just in creativity and in her ability to bring forth. There is strength in her from within. That is why a woman is called to carry.

It’s ALREADY there

What is done in darkness will come to light. You are what you have been doing in darkness. You came to light. If you want to change the way things are going you have to start in the dark. When you want to do something, you have to shut it down, fade it to black. That scene is over. Accept it, forgive and let go. Forgive and forget, fade it to black, impregnate yourself in the dark, come out on the stage with a new wardrobe, a new set, a new part and learn your lines and work your piece. Your attitude determines your altitude.

God always deals with things that are without form and void. Everything you need exists for you right now, but it is without form and void. It is waiting for you to go in and cash it. The universe is a big dough ball, and you have to take it and become the cookie cutter. Do you know how you cut the cookie out of the dough? You do it with the law of your imagination. Your imagination is creation. These truths are so simple.

Everyone has a dream in him or her that they have to reach into themselves and pull out of the darkness that which needs to be showcased in the light. Now, did God say let there be light before the light was? No. Actually the light always existed, God just called light forth for everyone else to see. You can see what is in you, in your darkness that no one else can see. It’s already there.
