Like the Office of the Prophet, one also cannot merely grow into the Office of an Apostle. It is not through the development of one’s spiritual gift that you can progress into being an apostle. The Office of an Apostle is also a special governmental gift that Christ gives. It’s also a special calling by Christ—the head of the church.

In the governmental office of the Apostle, there is a whole level of the prophetic spirit that flows through apostles that is not present for prophets in the shallow end of the “prophetic pool” illustration. The “Office of the Apostle” refers to a person’s spiritual gift or office that has been recognized by the church leadership that the person is authorized to engage in open ministry, centered around the gift.

While prophesying, these apostles interlace signs, wonders, healing, and miracles. All the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit will be involved while the apostle prophesies. This office also moves to equip saints who have different spiritual gifts, i.e. the gifts of prophecy, words of wisdom, word of knowledge, gifts of healing, working of miracles, and all other gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles, because they operate on a higher level of anointing, are able to teach and train others in these various spiritual gifts. They do not just operate in these spiritual gifts themselves, out of their own giftedness.

Do you think you are called to the Office of the Apostle?

God can also use the office of the prophet to do prophetic presbyteries. God can use this ministry to establish leadership in the church to minister to members of the church together in a prophetic sense, and as a team. This ministry activity is a prophetic presbytery. It is initially done to encourage members and leaders of a local church, and to provide specific directions from God to individuals. It’s usually done by the laying on of hands. It’s called a presbytery because it is usually performed by elders in the Office of the Prophet.

Conduct a Prophetic Presbytery in your local church.

  1. Invite ministry leaders and faithful church volunteers to a morning of prophetic presbytery.
  2. Candidates must line up while the prophets in the office give personal prophetic words to them.
  3. The goal is to confirm what God has been telling them or to encourage them with a new call from God.

Preaching and prophesying are different activities. Prophecy is a spontaneous revelation of knowledge from the Holy Spirit, while preaching is normally done by speaking biblical truths, which have been studied, researched, and organized for the sake of presentation. Preaching proclaims the logos (written word), while prophecy declares a rhema (fresh revelation) from the Spirit of God.

The office of the prophet can operate on both levels. There are even times when the Holy Spirit can move in on the prepared teaching and modifies it, even when the speaker has prepared a different message. The Holy Spirit can change the prepared teaching drastically by revealing illustrations and examples that can grip the hearers of the message. The quickening of the heart of God is experienced by the people through the pulpit. Most of the time, when the prophet in the Office speaks, the Holy Spirit supplies rhema from the logos. This occurrence does not mean that the speaker or the prophet must skip bible study and message preparation all together, with

the assumption that the Holy Spirit will give them their message and preach their sermon for them. The Lord wants even the prophets to be excellent in their duty. On the other hand, it is also dangerous and counterproductive to resist the Spirit of God’s leading, and strictly stick to one’s notes. The Holy Spirit can lead the prophet preacher, and he must yield to the Holy Spirit’s leading.

Let’s look at the attributes of prophetic preaching:

  • It is a biblical truth. Any prophetic message must conform to and be subordinate to the written Word of God, which is our standard of judging.
  • The illustrations and examples and even the phraseology are precisely what God desires to communicate.
  • The hearer will have the impression that God is speaking directly to him or her.
  • This type of message, with its prophetic instructions, admonitions, etc. is like a prophecy for that group of people.
  • Prophetic preaching is typically delivered by someone who holds one of the five-fold offices (prophet, pastor, apostle, teacher, evangelist).

The Anointing of the Office

The Office of the Prophet receives the greatest anointing, authority, and responsibility in the realm of the prophetic. The prophet has a stronger utterance in the spirit. The prophet in the office has a strong connection with the Holy Spirit, as a product of the prophet’s experience in the gift and ministry. This office has the grace of God needed to go beyond the realm of edification, exhortation, and comfort. In fact, this office is a gift extension of

Christ himself as the Prophet.

The Office of the Prophet is anointed and authorized by the Holy Spirit to operate in a higher spiritual realm. This anointing and authority is not always with someone with the gift of prophecy or the spirit of prophecy. The prophetic ministry can get controversial

because it deals with so much truth. The office of the prophet oversees this ministry to make sure everything is centered on God.

Moreover, the anointing of a particular Office of the Prophet may differ from prophet to prophet. The reason is because we are blessed with unique gifts and we have an irreplaceable role to play; e.g. sometimes the prophet is also anointed in the gift of the actual administration of the gift. Some prophets are stronger in certain areas than others.

Think about this. Do you know that John the Baptist did no miracles and yet was considered a great prophet? Elijah and Elisha were able to raise the dead. Daniel was a young man in a foreign king’s palace who was academically excellent and was also gifted in the area of visions and dreams. Ezekiel also saw visions. These prophets in the Bible had different administrations. Some individuals were focused on delivering people from their sins through a prophetic word, while others in the area of discernment.
