WHAT DO APOSTLES DO?

The Office of the Apostle is primarily responsible for delegating leaders and imparting gifts to people whom God is calling them to appoint. Apostles have the capacity to see other apostles who do not know they are apostles yet. Thus, they are tasked to call

out these apostles. They see other people who are called into the fivefold ministries and call them out as well. The apostles, more than those who hold office in the other four of the fivefold ministries, are able to call out people into office. The apostles also call out and appoint leaders in the local church. They set other ministries in place in the local church. They have high spiritual authorities in their church movements.

Apostolic team members of a church movement are able to impart spiritual gifts to other fivefold ministries to be able to do the  calling. In Romans 1:11, Paul expressed his desire to see this church because he wanted to impart some spiritual gifts to this congregation to make them strong. The apostles can also direct, correct, discipline, and rebuke.

They are also authorized to tear down and build up for the sake of protecting the integrity of God’s Word and the church.See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”

(Jeremiah 1:10)

THE LEVEL OF APOSTLESHIP

Like the Office of the Prophet, one also cannot merely grow into the Office of an Apostle. It is not through the development of one’s spiritual gift that you can progress into being an apostle. The Office of an Apostle is also a special governmental gift that Christ gives. It’s also a special calling by Christ—the head of the church.

In the governmental office of the Apostle, there is a whole level of the prophetic spirit that flows through apostles that is not present for prophets in the shallow end of the “prophetic pool” illustration. The “Office of the Apostle” refers to a person’s spiritual gift or office that has been recognized by the church leadership that the person is authorized to engage in open ministry, centered around the gift.

While prophesying, these apostles interlace signs, wonders, healing, and miracles. All the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit will be involved while the apostle prophesies. This office also moves to equip saints who have different spiritual gifts, i.e. the gifts of prophecy, words of wisdom, word of knowledge, gifts of healing, working of miracles, and all other gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles, because they operate on a higher level of anointing, are able to teach and train others in these various spiritual gifts. They do not just operate in these spiritual gifts themselves, out of their own giftedness.

PROPHETIC PRESBYTERY

God can also use the office of the prophet to do prophetic presbyteries. God can use this ministry to establish leadership in the church to minister to members of the church together in a prophetic sense, and as a team. This ministry activity is a prophetic presbytery. It is initially done to encourage members and leaders of a local church, and to provide specific directions from God to individuals. It’s usually done by the laying on of hands. It’s called a presbytery because it is usually performed by elders in the Office of the Prophet.

Conduct a Prophetic Presbytery in your local church.

  1. Invite ministry leaders and faithful church volunteers to a morning of prophetic presbytery.
  2. Candidates must line up while the prophets in the office give personal prophetic words to them.
  3. The goal is to confirm what God has been telling them or to encourage them with a new call from God.

PROPHETIC TEACHING

Preaching and prophesying are different activities. Prophecy is a spontaneous revelation of knowledge from the Holy Spirit, while preaching is normally done by speaking biblical truths, which have been studied, researched, and organized for the sake of presentation. Preaching proclaims the logos (written word), while prophecy declares a rhema (fresh revelation) from the Spirit of God.

The office of the prophet can operate on both levels. There are even times when the Holy Spirit can move in on the prepared teaching and modifies it, even when the speaker has prepared a different message. The Holy Spirit can change the prepared teaching drastically by revealing illustrations and examples that can grip the hearers of the message. The quickening of the heart of God is experienced by the people through the pulpit. Most of the time, when the prophet in the Office speaks, the Holy Spirit supplies rhema from the logos. This occurrence does not mean that the speaker or the prophet must skip bible study and message preparation all together, with

the assumption that the Holy Spirit will give them their message and preach their sermon for them. The Lord wants even the prophets to be excellent in their duty. On the other hand, it is also dangerous and counterproductive to resist the Spirit of God’s leading, and strictly stick to one’s notes. The Holy Spirit can lead the prophet preacher, and he must yield to the Holy Spirit’s leading.

Let’s look at the attributes of prophetic preaching:

  • It is a biblical truth. Any prophetic message must conform to and be subordinate to the written Word of God, which is our standard of judging.
  • The illustrations and examples and even the phraseology are precisely what God desires to communicate.
  • The hearer will have the impression that God is speaking directly to him or her.
  • This type of message, with its prophetic instructions, admonitions, etc. is like a prophecy for that group of people.
  • Prophetic preaching is typically delivered by someone who holds one of the five-fold offices (prophet, pastor, apostle, teacher, evangelist).

Deliver a Prophetic Preaching

  1. Pray to the Lord to equip you for delivering prophetic preaching.
  2. Take note of the qualities of prophetic preaching above.
  3. You must be able to share this word to a small group or to your local church worship service.
  4. Keep in mind that you must prepare for this message, but you must also dedicate this message to the Lord.
  5. Ask for rhema for the logos.

The Anointing of the Office

The Office of the Prophet receives the greatest anointing, authority, and responsibility in the realm of the prophetic. The prophet has a stronger utterance in the spirit. The prophet in the office has a strong connection with the Holy Spirit, as a product of the prophet’s experience in the gift and ministry. This office has the grace of God needed to go beyond the realm of edification, exhortation, and comfort. In fact, this office is a gift extension of

Christ himself as the Prophet.

The Office of the Prophet is anointed and authorized by the Holy Spirit to operate in a higher spiritual realm. This anointing and authority is not always with someone with the gift of prophecy or the spirit of prophecy. The prophetic ministry can get controversial

because it deals with so much truth. The office of the prophet oversees this ministry to make sure everything is centered on God.

Moreover, the anointing of a particular Office of the Prophet may differ from prophet to prophet. The reason is because we are blessed with unique gifts and we have an irreplaceable role to play; e.g. sometimes the prophet is also anointed in the gift of the actual administration of the gift. Some prophets are stronger in certain areas than others.

Think about this. Do you know that John the Baptist did no miracles and yet was considered a great prophet? Elijah and Elisha were able to raise the dead. Daniel was a young man in a foreign king’s palace who was academically excellent and was also gifted in the area of visions and dreams. Ezekiel also saw visions. These prophets in the Bible had different administrations. Some individuals were focused on delivering people from their sins through a prophetic word, while others in the area of discernment.

The Prophetic Ministry and the Local Church

The prophetic ministry is concerned with the church. It brings God’s perspective into your prophetic word for the church. You receive a specific calling to serve your local church. Moreover, the prophetic ministry allows you to release vision into situations that your spiritual family is in. Your job as a prophetic minister is to help undermine the  work of the enemy against your church and community.

The prophet extends one hand in the past, and the other in the future. However, the prophet is also able to bring together both elements into the present in a wise prophetic instruction for what must be done. The knowledge the prophet gains from the Holy Spirit regarding both the past and the future can offer a radically different perspective from what is currently going on in the church. The main sphere of influence in the church comes from the prophetic ministry. The direction the church can take comes from this ministry. Moreover, the prophetic ministry helps discern who must be the next leader, and what must be the next move. This ministry is also concerned with checking if the church is fulfilling its specific call. The prophet would always direct everyone’s focus on God’s majesty and sovereignty in times of trouble. The perspective of the prophet edifies the church; it gives the church faith, hope, and energy to wait for the breakthrough.

What do you understand about the work of the prophetic                                                 ministry in your local church?

THE PROPHETIC MINISTRY & THE GIFT OF PROPHECY: A COMPARISON

Prophetic ministry is different from the gift of prophecy because the former reflects an increase in the gift and the service. When a believer moves into the prophetic ministry, there is an increase in grace. God gives different grace to believers. There is a greater portion of grace that the believer will find sufficient for service in the ministry.

The believer also experiences his faith increase. There is nothing more special than being used by God to declare a prophetic word, and seeing it come to pass. Your faith will truly be built up. The more you use a gift, the more it grows. In the same way, the more you speak with a person, the more you’ll be familiar with his voice. In the prophetic ministry, you will be called upon because of this gift regularly. Thus, the revelation you will receive from the Holy Spirit will also grow. You will be more familiar with the voice of God.

The prophet is also given more responsibility in the ministry, compared to when he is just a person with a prophetic gift. There is greater accountability for the validity of the prophetic word. In the process, there is also growth in the character. The prophet’s humility and reliance on God must grow, otherwise, pride and self-dependency would be stumbling blocks. Moreover, there will be greater submission to church leadership and greater intimacy with the Holy Spirit.

What do you understand about the work of the prophetic ministry in your local church?

DUAL REVELATION

Prophets in the ministry need to experience dual revelation. The first level is through the general Word of God—the Bible. While studying Scripture, the Holy Spirit can illuminate certain verses or words that will give the prophet a message for the local church or for an individual. Scripture is a solid source for giving general guidelines and wisdom on different areas of life, which include relationships with others, finances, church, and ministry. The second revelation a prophet experiences is through a specific word or prophecy. One needs to be allied with a specific word or prophecy. While Scripture gives you a general knowledge about the revelation, the Spirit of God can give the prophet fine and specific details about these general principles in the Bible.

Ask God for a revelation today. In your quiet time, what general revelation is the Bible revealing to you?

Has the Holy Spirit given you a word, a vision, or a sense recently?

If God has given you both general and specific revelations, ask God to give you a prophetic word on this. If not, seek the Lord for a message.

DISTINGUISHING THE PROPHETIC MINISTRY

Think back to the image of a swimming pool with different sections and different levels of depth. In the middle section, the water gets deeper than when you began stepping into the pool (i.e. pool steps). In the prophetic realm, there is a time for individuals to move forward and gradually deeper into the expression of God’s heart. Others with the gift of prophecy will move deeper with greater desire, more in-depth training and experience, while some would not. There’s nothing wrong either way. It’s all according to the grace God has given each individual. The continuous practice of the gift of prophecy can push us in the direction of ministry rather than occasionally using the gift.

The pastoral leadership can usually use a prophetic person to hear from the Lord. Moreover, these leaders also consider those with the gift of prophecy to be valuable. Most of the time, leaders can recognize this gift. They would then nurture and commission these prophets for regular ministry in the local church. These prophets primarily operate in the sphere of the local church first. The prophetic ministry operates on a local church level, the same way a kid’s church ministry and ushering ministry operates.

The prophetic ministry is also empowered by a strong anointing that rests upon an individual at all times. In this level, it is already a given that the prophet is committed to his gift and is called to serve. Commitment is evidenced by a lifestyle that is devoted to being set apart for the prophetic. Integrity defines this lifestyle. Moreover, calling is also preparatory for those who will later function in the Office of the Prophet.

The prophetic ministry grows from the gift of prophecy—from one level to another. This ministry means getting into deeper waters in terms of one’s faith in the Lord. More than advancing in one’s gift, it’s about a deeper relationship with God. A prophet in this ministry can believe for more specific revelations from God, instead of a general type of prophetic word. In this ministry, prophets experience a more frequent and more intense use of the prophetic gifts. Moreover, it also includes prophesying to a wider range of people, situations, and activities.Aside from simply prophesying, the prophet is called to address a variety of issues within the local church, just like how Moses was with his elders.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it

yourself alone. (Numbers 11:16-17)

How have you moved from using the prophetic gift from being in the prophetic ministry? How is it different?

PRACTICAL WAYS TO TRAIN IN THE PROPHETIC GIFT

If you believe you received the gift of prophecy, then you have the duty to grow your gift. You must be intentional about doing so.

What can you do TODAY?

Fight Fear

It is understandable to encounter fear when you find yourself prophesying. It is a fearful thing to dare to speak an impression, vision, or message from God. In the moment, your heart might pound, your breath might become short, and your hands might sweat. Prophecy is a spiritual act, and your physical body may react because it is natural for the flesh to do this. Just keep going. Overcome the fear. Move past the fear as you humbly submit yourself to the Holy Spirit.

Be Teachable

One of the easiest ways to learn how to receive and declare a prophetic word is to spend time with someone who is more experienced than you. Zoe Ministries has been moving in the prophetic ministry for more than 30 years. This ministry has experienced attacks from the enemy and prophecies fulfilled.

Both challenges and victories produce wisdom. Prophetic leaders can give you practical instruction, careful guidance, and positive encouragement. Sometimes, leaders can also correct you. No one learned to use any gift or talent (whether spiritual or not) without

practicing. If you don’t have someone in your circle who can help you, look for someone.

Request for a Prophetic Word for Yourself

Getting a prophetic word for yourself is also significant. There is no one who can give you a more encouraging word than Christ himself. Other prophets may speak into your life, confirm the leading of the Holy Spirit, or even call out gifts and talents. The Strongest and most transformative word comes from heaven itself right into your spirit.

Be Tender and Kind

Remember, when you are speaking a prophetic word to another person, their heart is wide open to receive it. If you sense a sin or a compromise that you need to expose, do it with utmost love and tenderness. The person before you is vulnerable and exposed. Speak carefully and with grace. Consider who can hear the prophetic word. Don’t allow this ministry to embarrass or to condemn others. Your prophetic word should highlight God’s love and goodness, rather than the sin to be corrected or the promise being given.

Offer the Prophetic Word

A word of prophecy must be offered to another person with humility, rather than shoved down their throat. If a word is delivered in a demanding and controlling tone, then it can cause walls to go up for the person. It is best to offer and wait for the other person to choose to receive the word or to reject it.

Activating Your Prophetic Gift

Here are three questions you can ask God to activate your prophetic gift on a regular basis:

  • Do you love me?
  • What do you want me to say right now?
  • What are the gifts you have given me that you want me to focus on right now?
